September 18, 1919 – Fritz Pollard becomes the first African American to play pro football for a major team, the Akron Pros. His full name was Frederick Douglass “Fritz” Pollard. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 27, 1894. Fritz made a significant contribution to American football during a time of racial segregation. He was a founding member of the American Professional Football Association and he went to Brown University.
