On this day September 8, 1957, Althea Gibson became the first African American woman to win the U.S. Open tennis title. She won the French Open in 1956 and 1957, Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958 & US Open in 1957 and 1958. She was born in South Carolina in 1927 and passed away in 2003. She also competed in the LPGA (Ladies’ Professional Golf Association). Althea was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1957 and 1958.
