September 20, 1973 – Billy Jean King beats Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes (tennis). King had a prestigious tennis career; she won a total of 39 Grand Slam titles, which included 12 in singles, 16 in women’s doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. Riggs was also a skilled tennis player; he won several Grand Slam titles in the 1930s, including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. This match was a huge step in gender equality.
